Gov. Shumlin is correct to state that taxes will have to rise significantly in order to fund the new single-payer health care system. He is also correct when he states that they will replace — and not be added to — the increasingly expensive, unaffordable, confusing and unreliable private insurance premiums, copays and deductibles that most of us are currently paying.

In the end, we will pay significantly less for better and more consistent health care than we are now paying. All Vermonters will have health care regardless of employment or economic status. None of us will experience bankruptcy — or worse due to lack of care — that is usually the result of nonexistent or inadequate private health insurance. The result will be more and better health care for all of us, at a much lower cost.
