The Problem of the Uninsured

The uninsured, about whom we’ve heard so much, are symptoms of the problem in health care.

The underinsured, about whom we’ve heard less, are also symptoms. They are the fastest growing class of those disadvantaged by our health care situation today.

But nearly everyone, insured and uninsured alike, are at serious risk of financial bankruptcy should they suffer a serious illness. This is a national disgrace. And yet the proposed reforms at the national level cannot remedy this problem. Not enough money exists to fill in the gaps and exclusions contained in millions upon millions of insurance policies.

Single payer is a comprehensive answer to the insurance problem; it is not a piecemeal patch.
