I am excited about Gov. Shumlin’s proposed health care bill, H.202. For too long, our country has embraced a corrupt system that benefits insurance and pharmaceutical companies while leaving people to face insurmountable costs to accessing health care. It is a crime for large corporations to profit off of even a single person’s health. Access to adequate and affordable health care is a human right that must no longer be administered along the lines of wealth, especially in a country harboring so many systemic limitations to individual achievement, limitations that affect people along the lines of race, class, gender, sexuality and many other factors. So many other countries have recognized health care as a human right. If the United States won’t take the leap, Vermont should lead the way.
