Diane Ballou ("How will health care reform be financed?" Feb. 26) asks to know how Vermont’s new health care system will be paid for. This is like expecting an excavator to give you a bid on fixing your driveway without knowing what’s wrong with it, how long it is, or what kind of surface it has. Until we know what the benefit package will cover and what subsidies will be available and who will be included, we can’t even guess at what it will cost. That work has to get done first.

Everyone knows we can save the money that goes to the current system for producing mountains of paperwork, denying claims, dropping people when they get sick, and taking millions of dollars for huge salaries and investor profits.
